Civil vs Symbolic Ceremony: Differences and How to Choose

When deciding to marry outside of a religious ceremony, you face two options: the civil ceremony and the symbolic ceremony. They are often confused or considered the same thing, but they are quite different. Understanding the differences is essential to making the right choice and experiencing your wedding day exactly as you've dreamed it.

The civil ceremony: legal value

The civil ceremony is the official act that validates marriage from a legal standpoint. It is performed by a civil registrar (the mayor or a delegate) and follows a legally established formula. It includes reading Civil Code articles, exchanging consent and signing registers. It has legal value and produces immediate juridical effects: it changes civil status, creates community of property (unless otherwise chosen) and recognizes conjugal rights.

Traditionally it takes place in the town hall, but increasingly municipalities allow celebration at external venues through delegation. In Sicily, many municipalities offer this option, allowing civil rites to be held at villas, resorts or outdoor locations.

The symbolic ceremony: freedom and personalization

The symbolic ceremony has no legal value in itself, but carries enormous emotional and symbolic significance. It is a fully personalized celebration led by a professional celebrant, telling the couple's love story with bespoke words. There are no mandatory formulas, no legal articles to read: just your story, your emotions and the rituals you choose.

The advantages of a symbolic ceremony are numerous: you can freely choose the location (beach, garden, villa, mountain), customize every aspect of the ritual, include symbolic rituals like the sand ceremony, handfasting, unity candle, actively involve friends and family with readings, poems or dedications, and experience the ceremony at your own pace and style.

The two options are not mutually exclusive

Here is the key point: civil and symbolic ceremonies are not alternatives—they are complementary. The most popular solution among couples is to combine both: the civil rite at the town hall (or venue with a delegated official) for legal value, and the symbolic ceremony at the wedding venue for emotional value.

The civil ceremony can take place a few days before, the same morning, or at the same location as the symbolic ceremony. In the latter case, the delegated official performs the civil part (a few minutes) and then the celebrant leads the symbolic ceremony. This way you have both legality and emotion.

Which one to choose?

If total personalization, emotional guest involvement and freedom to celebrate wherever and however you want are important to you, the symbolic ceremony is the ideal choice. If you also want legal recognition, add the civil rite. You do not have to give up anything: you can have both.

Summary of differences

  • Legal value: civil ceremony has legal value, symbolic does not (on its own)
  • Officiated by: the civil rite by the mayor/delegate or by the celebrant in municipalities willing to grant him the delegation, the symbolic one by the celebrant
  • Script: civil rite follows a legal formula, symbolic is entirely personalized
  • Venue: civil rite at town hall or approved venue, symbolic anywhere
  • Symbolic rituals: not included in civil rite, free choice in symbolic
  • Duration: civil rite lasts 10-15 minutes, symbolic 30-45 minutes
  • Combinable: yes, the most common solution is to pair both
